New Leeds United goalkeeper Shane Higgs once again staked his claim for the number 1 shirt when the season kicks off with an inspired performance at Newcastle.

Higgs who signed earlier in the summer from Cheltenham Town followed up a good performance against Blackburn on Saturday with another faultless display.

The new recruit made a couple of great saves in the first half from Ryan Taylor, the second one just before the break from point blank range and he continues to tick all the right boxes for Simon Grayson.

Speaking in the YEP Higgs said ‘I’m pleased with my performance and I had a good game against Blackburn as well. I hope it’s making the manager think about what to do in 10 days’ time.”

Higgs faces competition form Casper Ankergren who came on for the final half hour after missing Saturday`s draw with Blackburn Rovers.

When asked who was going to be the regular keeper, boss Simon Grayson said ‘They’re both doing very well.’

Leeds have one friendly left against Burnley on Saturday so it will be the last chance for the players to impress before the new season.
