A Leeds United online site is currently in the process of trying to earn Lucas Radebe the freedom of Leeds and they are petitioning Leeds City Council to give him the key to the freedom of the City.

Loads of Leeds currently has an online petition in full flow to support the cause and you can add your support by following the link at the bottom of the page.

Radebe became a cult hero during his eleven years at Elland Road after joining the club in 1994 from Kaiser Chiefs, from his native South Africa.

The defender made 200 appearances for Leeds and was the club captain during the clubs tremendous runs in both the UEFA Cup in 2000 and European Champions League in 2001.

Radebe finally hung up his boots in 2005, but he is still a cult hero at the club with his name still sung at every home and away game.

Having had contact from QuitoWhite from the site, he had this to say about the petition.

‘Like many Leeds United supporters, I have often been frustrated by the lack of recognition given to our heroes. Neither the Don nor John Charles received the knighthoods they so richly deserved; while other football greats are duly recognised, Leeds United is often left behind.

Partly inspired by the ‘Knight John Charles` campaign and the ‘Don Revie Tribute`, we`ve tried to think of a way in which Leeds United supporters all over the globe can become involved in a crusade to honour a Leeds United great. Our research showed that no past player or manager of Leeds United has ever been awarded the Freedom of the City of Leeds. Contrast this with the Freedom of the city awards made to Bob Paisley (Liverpool), Bobby Robson (Durham and Ipswich), and Harry Redknapp (Portsmouth), as well as other sportsmen such as Jenson Button (Frome), Andrew Flintoff (Preston) and Michael Vaughan (Sheffield).

We feel that Lucas Radebe is the perfect candidate to receive the Freedom of the City of Leeds, not just for the contribution he made during his playing career, but also for the magnificent way in which the Chief has represented LUFC and the City of Leeds in his ambassadorial activities. He is truly a Leeds United legend, a man loved by Leeds United supporters everywhere. The ‘Make the Chief a Freeman` campaign gives Leeds fans the opportunity to show Lucas Radebe what he means to us, and all you have to do is sign the online petition.`
