LUFC Grayson – Win does not paper over the cracks

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson says the win over Ipswich Town could not paper over the cracks of a poor performance.

Leeds scored three times in the final sixteen minutes of the game after goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was sent off for the visitors with just twenty minutes remaining.

The visitors had led since the 34th minute when Adam Drury fired under Andy Lonergan and Leeds had little spark in attack until the McCarthy sending off.

Speaking after the game on Yorkshire Radio, Grayson said, “A great result, which is all that matters at the end of the day, that is what it is all about, winning matches no matter how well you play or how poorly you play.

“We can`t paper over the cracks and say how poor and disappointing we were in the first half. We were lacklustre for whatever reason. They dominated most of the possession and we didn`t pass the ball well enough. It was difficult conditions out there but that is not making excuses, we didn`t perform anywhere near and good as we can do.”

Following McCarthy`s sending off, it still took two moments of madness from the Ipswich defence to put Leeds ahead.

Ibrahima Sonko somehow managed to divert the ball towards Snodgrass who had the easy task of drawing Leeds level and then substitute goalkeeper Lee-Barrett hesitated, allowing Ross McCormack to nip in and score.

The points were guaranteed in injury time when Luciano Becchio got on the end of a long clearance by Andy Lonergan to score.
