LUFC Grayson – The difference was the finishing

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson felt the only difference between the two sides was the quality of finishing.

Nikola Zigic scored four times for the Birmingham as they came from behind to beat Leeds 4-1 at Elland Road.

It could have been so different with Luciano Becchio missing three great chances in the opening five minutes.

Grayson was delighted with the way the side had started the game but the difference was in the quality of finishing.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Grayson said, “I thought we started the game ever so well. We had talked all week about getting a positive start. I thought the fans were brilliant and the players responded. We got at them and we had so many chances in the first four or five minutes. Becchio could have had a hat trick.

“It was the start we wanted. We got the goal and were dominant. The shape of the team was good, we worked them and pressed them and we got balls into the box.

“The difference was in both boxes. The big lad Zigic had four opportunities and had four free efforts and that was the difference.”

Despite the early misses Leeds were still in the ascendancy and deservedly took the lead when leading goalscorer Ross McCormack scored his fourteenth goal of the season on seventeen minutes.

Birmingham had rarely threatened the Leeds goal but they were level just past the half hour when Zigic found space in the area to beat Lonergan.

The second half started evenly but the game was turned on its head in the space of seven minutes just past the hour.

Zigic scored three times with the Leeds defence all at sea.

The result sees Leeds drop down to tenth in the championship table.
