Leeds United look set to be without striker Davide Somma through injury for most of the season according to reports although boss Simon Grayson remains optimistic.
Somma was forced to miss the midweek game at Falkirk through injury and he revealed on his twitter page on Friday that he faced a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, when he posted – “Got scan back. Torn my ACL, am going to be out for five to six months.”
The post was quickly removed and Grayson revealed in the Yorkshire Post that they have yet to receive any timescale on his recovery, when he said, “Contrary to what has been said on Twitter, it (the injury) is not confirmed and the time-scale could also be very misleading.
“We will know more about Davide`s injury and the scan results over the next few days, at which time I will be in a better position to comment on the full diagnosis.”
The South African international enjoyed his breakthrough season at Elland Road last season and he was hoping to build upon that this term.
The 26 year old enjoyed a very successful spell at Lincoln City towards the end of the 2009/10 season, where he netted nine times in fourteen appearances.
Somma netted twice on his championship debut for Leeds, as a second half substitute in the win over Millwall in August.
He went on to score twelve goals in thirty-one appearances during the season with many of them coming off the substitute`s bench.
With Luciano Becchio still recovering from surgery, it leaves Leeds with just three recognised strikers, who scored just three goals between them last season for Leeds.
Billy Paynter scored just once in twenty-three appearances and Ross McCormack twice in twenty-one games, both coming in the final two games of the season.
Mike Grella is currently on the transfer list after making just two substitute appearances last season.
