Leeds United boss Simon Grayson says that he has not given up hope of holding onto his leading goalscorer Jermaine Beckford who is out of contract with the club this summer.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Grayson said, ‘If there’s a chance of keeping Jermaine within our financial constraints then we will try and keep him because he’s a fantastic player. We turned down good money in January because we wanted to win promotion. His goals have proved that was the right decision.

‘He has become a hero. Whether he leaves as one is a question for another time. If we can offer him the right deal I would love him to stay.”

Beckford has had something of a mixed season both on and off the pitch this season.

He was put on the transfer list last summer only for it to be withdrawn and then put in a transfer request himself in January only for him then to have a change of heart and commit himself to the club for the rest of the season.

Despite once again being the leading goalscorer this season with 31 goals he`s been the target at times of the Leeds boo boys which eventually saw him dropping to the bench after a serious dip in his form.

On Saturday he was recalled to the starting line up and was made Captain. He scored the crucial goal that sent Leeds back into the Championship.

He was substituted in the final minute of the game and left the pitch to a standing ovation from all four sides of the ground.

Newcastle tried and failed to sign the 26 year old last season but Everton have now become favourites to land him.

Continuing, Grayson said, ‘If you are competing against teams from the Premier League it’s a different ball game. If he does move on he’ll do so with my best wishes because he’s been a fantastic player for us.’

After scoring 85 goals in three seasons for Leeds his goals will be very hard to replace and fans will be hoping that he signs a new deal at Elland Road.
