Leeds United boss Simon Grayson insisted that Andy Lonergan was always his number one choice to come into the club after finally signing the goalkeeper from Preston North End on Monday.

Lonergan was close to signing for Leeds earlier in the month before negotiations broke down.

After the sale of Kasper Schmeichel in June, Leeds have been linked with a whole host of goalkeepers in the media but Grayson insisted that Lonergan was always his first choice. Speaking on the official website, Grayson said, “Contrary to the speculation we weren`t chasing a lot of goalkeepers, Andy was always my number one choice, and I`m delighted we could bring him here.”

Lonergan joins Paul Rachubka at the club who signed earlier in the summer from Blackpool and Grayson is now looking forward to healthy competition for the number one shirt.

“It adds competition to our goalkeeping position which is what I wanted to do. Andy knows Paul has done well in pre-season so the competition will be good. I`m looking forward to the battle between the two of them,” Grayson continued.

Leeds are now in Norway for a pre season friendly with Sandefjord tonight, before completing their pre season programme with an home game against Newcastle on Sunday.
