Leeds United manager Simon Grayson is backing striker Billy Paynter to find his scoring boots in the near future.

Paynter as had a frustrating start to his Leeds career since suffering a shin injury during pre season that forced him to miss the first fifteen games of the season.

Since then he`s been largely used as a substitute and as made just two starts in the 3-3 draw with Portsmouth and the 2-1 defeat at Cardiff over the busy festive period.

Paynter came on as a second half substitute against Scunthorpe for the injured Luciano Becchio today and came close to opening his Leeds account when team mate Davide Somma got in the way of his goal bound shot.

Grayson is happy with the contribution made by Paynter and is sure that once his first goal comes more will follow, speaking on Yorkshire Radio after the Scunthorpe game, Grayson said, “Billy did everything else apart from score a goal today.
“In his second half performance, he worked hard and held the ball up for us; unfortunately he`s just not getting the breaks in front of goal but that will come.”
“Like many strikers, once he gets that first goal under his belt he will go on to get many more.”

Paynter scored 28 goals last season with former club Swindon Town, including four in the two league meetings with Leeds.

The 26 year old faces tough competition for the striker`s role at Elland Road, with Luciano Becchio already netting thirteen times this season and Davide Somma eight.

Another new recruit who is still looking for his first goal in Leeds colours is Ross McCormack who joined from Cardiff City in August.

McCormack is still to find his first goal in fourteen appearances for Leeds after scoring 31 goals in 73 appearances for the Welsh club.
