Former Leeds United midfielder Shaun Derry says that the Leeds crowd could drive Leeds towards promotion this season.

Derry returned to Elland Road on Saturday with Queens Park Rangers for the first time since he left in January 2008.

Almost 30,000 fans turned out at Elland Road despite freezing conditions and snow up and down the country and Derry feels that they could play there part in the clubs push for promotion

Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Derry said, ‘The crowd are second to none and the best in the league when they get behind you, they really are.

‘When they are singing, it’s like an extra man.”

Leeds fans were in great voice all afternoon, especially in the second half when all four sides joined in with scarf waving as ‘We are the champions, champions of Europe` rang around the ground for a lengthy spell.

Derry also believes the side can kick on especially after the weekend win over his side Queens Park Rangers, who currently lead the Championship.

‘They are contenders, without a shadow of a doubt. Especially after Saturday’s performance.
‘Psychologically, with them beating the top-of-the-league side, they are going to take a lot of heart from that.
‘Leeds have just got consistency and momentum from the last six or seven games and a togetherness in their play. I thought that showed brightly.’
Come the end, we were perhaps hanging on and it could have been three or four,” Derry continued.

Leeds are now unbeaten in nine games since suffering a 4-0 home defeat to Cardiff City in October which left Leeds in sixteenth position.

The victory over Rangers moved Leeds to within three points of the league leaders and Leeds now face a busy festive period with home games against Portsmouth and Middlesbrough and away games at Leicester and Cardiff City in great form.

*Continuing on from what Shaun Derry said, make sure you bring your Leeds scarf for the next home game against Portsmouth, and join in with ‘We are the champions, champions of Europe` as the scenes around Elland Road on Saturday were fantastic.
