Leeds United defender Alex Bruce is ready to stake his claim for a regular place in the Leeds side by working hard during pre season.

The players returned last Friday after their summer breaks and Bruce admitted on the official website, “It`s been a very tough week. I`d go as far as saying it`s been one of the toughest I`ve ever had in terms of running.”

The defender joined Leeds last summer from Ipswich Town and was in and out of the side during his first season, eventually making twenty-four appearances in total.

Bruce enjoyed his best spell in the side at the turn of the year and put in an accomplished performance, in the 1-1 draw at Arsenal in the FA Cup.

The 26 year old is now ready to put himself at the forefront of manager Simon Grayson`s thoughts by performing during pre season. “Hopefully I can be more consistent in the starting eleven and I will do my best to keep my place.
“I`m very determined. No player wants to work Monday to Friday and not play on a Saturday. You work hard in pre season to stake your claim for the first game of the season and that`s my aim,” he continued.

He made his last appearance of the season in the disappointing 3-0 defeat at Swansea City at the end of February.

Leigh Bromby replaced Bruce in the side, who in turn was replaced by Richard Naylor as boss Simon Grayson struggled to find a solid performing duo in the centre of defence.

Despite finishing in seventh place last season, Leeds conceded seventy goals, one of the worst defensive records in the championship.
