Leeds United chairman Ken Bates hasn`t ruled Leeds out of the running for former player Alan Smith.

Smith currently at Newcastle United has been told that they are willing to listen to bids for him, despite him having a year remaining on his contract at St James` Park.

The rumours about Smith rejoining his boyhood club have been circulating since the January transfer window but the biggest obstacle would seem to be the player`s wages.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Bates said: ‘It depends on whether Simon wants him which is his decision.
“He has been at Manchester United and Newcastle so his wages are in a stratosphere, probably well over the seven-figure medium, so if he did join us he would have to knock a nought off and maybe half it.

‘But nothing is certain and nothing is uncertain. I can confirm we are continuing our quest for the right players and if he is fit Alan would certainly be a good addition to our squad, but that would need further investigation and consideration by Simon.’

The next obstacle would be would some Leeds fans be willing to forgive a player that left to join their biggest rivals back in 2004 when he signed for Manchester United.
