Vital Scunthorpe have been kind enough to answer a few question about Ramon Nunez who spent time on loan at Glanford Park towards the end of last season.

Many thanks to Max Bell from the Vital Scunthorpe site.

Had you heard of Nunez prior to him signing for Scunthorpe and what did you think of his signing when it was announced?
No, I’m ashamed to say I, (and almost all Scunny fans), hadn’t heard of Ramon before we had signed him. However the signing was greeted with quiet optimism, as the team was crying out for creativity and goals and a certain unknown loanee from Leeds reserves did us no harm once upon a time!

What did you think of Nunez during his time at Glanford Park?
Where to start on that one!? Despite having played for the Iron for only 8 games he was a serious contender for player of the season, no doubt about it!
He was out on the left wing the entire time, and was an absolute joy to watch. He can be frustrating some times but for the lion’s share, he was mercurial.

What were his strength’s and weaknesses?
He offered Scunthorpe something they didn’t have, unpredictability and a dash of sparkle and creativity. He was brilliant with the ball at his feet, running at defenders and spreading the play. Not only was he a great asset from set plays, crosses and assists but also he turned up with the goals when required. 3 goals in 8 games is an average record no-one else can come close to matching. Mind you, don’t expect him to be tracking back constantly; the full back behind him was often left bare when the opposition countered.

Would you have liked him to stay at Glanford Park?
All the Iron fans would have absolutely loved it if he would have stayed at Glanford Park for another year. He was impressive in a poor Championship side, so he would have been an absolute monster in a decent League One outfit. Sadly, it wasn’t to be but if I was offered the chance, I’d run over to West Yorkshire and wheel-barrow him back myself. Had we had him since August, safety may well have been possible.

Did the Scunthorpe fans come up with any good chants or nicknames for Nunez?
Ramon shot himself straight into the hearts of all Iron fans but sadly, we’re not that an imaginative bunch in North Lincolnshire, so the chants (mind you – they were bloody often!), were sadly limited to the ‘Nunez Nunez!’ (Usually with olé, olé, olé, olé! in front of it).
The Honduran flags came out pretty quickly, but no – no nicknames sadly.

One final question, how did Andy Hughes do?
Andy is a really good honest professional, and the type who you would rely on to give his utmost come rain or shine. In a better side, he would have no doubt looked out of place, although at right back for us: he was sometimes given the run-around by particularly pacey wingers. He was a true pro, and a very experienced leader, so he should be a real asset in League One next season.

Thanks for your comments Max.

A lot of Leeds fans couldn`t understand how he didn`t get more of a chance at Leeds and he could have been that little extra ingredient for Leeds in the final few month`s of the season to help Leeds into the play offs at least.

It`s good to see that Hughesy is doing well for you. One thing you will always get is 100%
