?NO! It`s the atrocious American-designed monstrosity that is to become the new home of everyone`s favourite scousers Liverpool FC.
The building has been designed by the US based HKS and seems to draw inspiration from a number of different sources including the new home of the Dallas Cowboys (they`ve cheated here slightly as HKS designed that too), the Lowry in Salford Quays and the Selfridges building on the back of the Bull Ring in Birmingham.
Now I`m not sure about anyone else, but for my £300million investment plan I would be hoping for somewhat of an improvement on some old designs, an art gallery and a shopping centre that`s been hollowed out to stick a footy pitch in, however RedScouse fans appear to be raving about the drawings.
It seems a shame that the top clubs have drifted far away from the football stadiums of the traditional sense, however one can only be overawed by the sweeping curves of such new developments as Wembley stadium or The Emirates, home of Premiership Rivals Arsenal. It now appears however that Liverpool have taken the escape from footballing tradition just that tiny bit further.
The new 60,000-seater stadium had already been planned out, however the new North American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have designed they want more bang for their buck when it comes to investing in the FC Liverpool “Franchise.”
Liverpool CEO Rick Parry told the BBC: The stadium will send a message out that we want to be best on the pitch and the best off the pitch.’
‘The architects have understood the challenge and understood the need to make the stadium uniquely Liverpool.
‘It will sit so well in Stanley Park and will be an integral part of it.”
It`s unique alright, as for sitting well anywhere in Liverpool, a question best left for others to answer. Keeping in traditions that come from Anfield, Liverpool`s home since their foundation will be a single tier stand in a desperate bid to ensure that the atmosphere of the “kop” returns when the team move to their new digs.
Parry went on to add: ‘Apart from the Kop, everything else about the stadium will be brand new. It’s futuristic, imaginative and very exciting. People who see it will think Liverpool.”
I`m thinking something ‘Our Rick`, but I don`t think the word is “Liverpool.”
