Kevin Blackwell could have the luxury of having a new Premiership player in his ranks. Eirik Bakke has returned to full training with the first-team squad after fully recovering from a hamstring problem.

The 28-year-old midfielder returned to Elland Road when Aston Villa sent him back because of ‘financial reasons’ after his successful loan move to the Midlands.

Bakke joined Villa in August and made 13 appearances during a loan spell which was expected to be made permanent. Villa boss David O’Leary made the right noises, saying the player would be at the club until May, but suddenly everything broke down.

However, Blackwell has already warned the Norway international he faces a fight to win a place in his match-day squad, with current midfielders Shaun Derry, Liam Miller, Jonathan Douglas and Eddie Lewis all enjoying a consistent run in the side.

Bakke made three appearances for Leeds at the start of the season before Villa made their move.
