Craig Levein had no sympathy ewhen one of his own players was shown red. He confirmed McCarthy would be fined for his red card, although the Foxes boss was also unhappy with the goal.

Levein: ‘On another day we would have won it. I am not condoning at all what Patrick McCarthy did. It was wrong to go running towards the linesman. The referee has reacted to something he has said and he deserves to go if that is the case. I have no complaints whatsoever with that.

‘But the whole thing comes about because the linesman has made a big mistake and it has cost us.

‘That goal changed the game. They had a little spell, but we were comfortable and we didn’t have any problems. I thought that we played most of the game in their half and we have played some good stuff.

‘It was a turning point. They got a goal that shouldn’t have been a goal and it took us down to 10 men.

‘But I must credit my players for their undoubted effort in the last 15 minutes of the game. I thought that we battered them for that period. We had good chances to score and we didn’t take them.

‘Paddy will get fined and he has no excuses. I don’t know if we would have got back into the match with 11 men, but we might have done and it is certainly more difficult to do so with 10.’
