Well, it just wasn’t to be this season. No I’m not talking about first team affairs and the way we failed to capitalise on automatic Championship promotion to the Premier League, I’m talking about our younger lads and their bid to make a great season better with more silverware.

Having romped to the Professional Development League (north) title ahead of time and with games to spare, Carlos Corberan also had his eye on seeing our next generation lift the Premier League Cup given our progress in that competition – but on Tuesday evening our eleven game unbeaten run came to an end in the Semi-Finals as we lost out to Newcastle United – 3-0 was the final score.

Disappointing yes, but nobody should be too down as Corberan’s charges have had a great year and deserve plenty of credit, and a few of them have also whet the appetite of fans at senior level as well as they continue their development.

Having largely dominated the opening 45 minutes and had chances to send advantage our way, Newcastle sucker punched us with two goals in four minutes in the second period and then it was a mountain to climb.

17-year-old Ryan Edmondson has certainly been one of the stand outs from the campaign at that level though and he took to social media following the match to promise the players would learn from the disappointment.

The correct message and to develop youngsters need to learn how to handle the highs and the lows in the game, so I have no doubts we’ll see more of him in the future.
