Leeds have been linked with a move for Newcastle United’s young Dutch keeper Tim Krul, according to reports.

The 19-year-old, who was in the Dutch squad for the recent European Under-21 Championships but didn’t spend any time on the pitch, signed a four-year deal with Newcastle in June. He has played once for Newcastle, against Palermo in the UEFA Cup last year, but missed six months after injuring himself while warming up prior to a clash with Watford.

However, while Sam Allardyce apparently sees Krul as part of his long-term plans, he is thought to be keen for the keeper to go out on loan to get some experience. Speculation suggests Elland Road will be Krul’s destination and that the loan deal will be for the whole season.

Hopefully a deal will be tied up soon and Krul does seem to be a decent keeper who will want to impress his employers by performing well while on loan. While it’s sad that Leeds should have to scramble around for youngsters, Krul did perform admirably in his one appearance for Newcastle.

But it will be a huge step down to move from the adulation of European football to having to face the likes of Gillingham on a cold afternoon…
