Leeds United saw their winning record attempt slip from their fingers at Gillingham courtesy of a referee who felt the need to take centre stage.
In the match preview, Vital Leeds United did say The referee for the fixture is Mr D. McDermid who has managed 12 yellow and 2 red cards in his 4 games so far this season. It appears that Mr McDermid is a relatively new referee to the Football League One game and from the records I have searched hasn’t actually officiated a Leeds United match yet. I do hope he enjoys his first one!
It now appears that he has perhaps enjoyed his game slightly too much, as Leeds finished the game with just 9 men following the sending off of both Tresor Kandol and Jermaine Beckford. It appears that Mr McDermid was having somewhat of a one-sided day, with numerous free kick shouts ignored. Striker Kandol was booked following a tackle by Efe Sodje in which the free kick was given the way of the Gillingham defender. Tresor followed this up by applauding a free kick awarded to The Whites, giving the referee (supposedly) no option but to issue the second yellow.
Jermaine Beckford joined his strike partner on 57 mintues for a second yellow card offense, as Leeds looked to hold on to the Seb Carole goal with just 9 men.
Gillingham waited until the 90th minute for Ian Cox to bring the Gills level, and this is how the game has finished in what can only be described as an absolute travesty.
Looks like lady luck, and the FA haven`t quite finished with us yet. Expect Wisey to make comment, and to be thoroughly punished.
