Leeds United were wrong to sack manager with 33% win rate, according international

He may have only won 33.33% of his games at Elland Road, but Marley Watkins reckons Leeds United were wrong to fire Paul Heckingbottom after just four months in the job, per quotes by the Daily Record.

Watkins played under Heckingbottom before the 41-year-old departed Barnsley for Yorkshire, and went on to flop massively as Thomas Christiansen replacement, but the now Bristol City winger considers the Whites wrong for terminating his contract.

For Watkins, his former boss is one of the best around and could have led us to the desired promotion places given time, which Marcelo Bielsa is on course to better in his first season in England, proving that the decision was right for one of the parties involved.

“I’ve played for a few great managers and Paul is right up there. He is quality,” said Watkins. “His man-management is spot on. He takes an interest in his players on and off the pitch and makes you feel really wanted.

“No one really gave us much of a chance of going up to the Championship, but he gave us confidence and belief no matter who we were up against.”

As for Heckingbottom’s time at Elland Road, the Wales international added: “I wasn’t surprised when Leeds came in for him, but I was shocked how it turned out.

“He wasn’t given the time there. He took over a team that was struggling, but it was never going to turn around in just four months. I have absolutely no doubt he would have been a success there given the chance. He would have taken them to the play-offs if he’d stayed.”
