Leeds United V York Match Report

This started out as great day and a throw back to the seventies.

Prior to the match the Leeds fans had descended on the local hostelries, making it feel like home with singing and chanting and abusing Manchester and Chelsea, all good stuff!

York did their best to keep the atmosphere 70s playing Led Zeppelin over an inadequate tannoy and putting the 2000 odd Leeds fans on an uncovered terrace in the rain. I haven’t seen such a poor terrace since the old Baseball ground at Derby.

The match was to be played on what looked a great surface until a ball landed on it and we realised that the game was actually been played on the river Ouse.

Any similarities with seventies did not take to the pitch this was one of the worst games of football I have ever seen. The only thing of note in the opening 45 was York hitting the angle of bar and post and the banter between fans on the terrace. I did particularly like a rendition of ‘Kandol in the wind.`

The whole first half was very disjointed, the back four look solid enough with Richardson and Marques though the midfield was non existent so sadly no real chance to judge Bayly and Weston.

The second half promised better with Alan Thompson appearing wearing the captains armband, though he seemed disinterested not surprising given the quality of the game around him. Beckford managed some nice tricks and got through on goal a couple of times but seems to have a mental block when it comes to shooting at the goal. Substitute goalkeeper Hammann demonstrated an alarming ability to always find touch when punting the ball. Maybe he should play full back for Leeds Rhinos! (Maybe he should, considering the Rhino`s latest defeat: ed)

Constantine played like Kandol but he was attacking the end that was a swamp so playing the ball on the ground was out of the question.

Having seen this performance I would not hold out any great hope for the season but fortunately it was only a friendly.

Thanks go to WhiteYork for the match report.
