Gus Poyet has spoken of his delight as a late goal from substitute Ian Westlake proved the difference between Oldham and Leeds United on Tuesday evening, and that the team spirit is what has kept the side performing so well in League One.
Speaking to the official Leeds United website Gus remarked:
”It was great action from Seb in the build up and a top class finish from Westy. It’s the way we are and the way the team keep believing.
“The attitude, concentration and the way they defended was all terrific and you have to congratulate the players.
‘The lads kept believing, and we know how important it is to be together. When it’s like that you keep going.”
New boys Wayne Andrews and Mark De Vries couldn’t come up with a goal between them, however the Leeds management were obviously pleased with them, attempting to convince people (badly) that they could continue now that Tresor Kandol and Jermaine Beckford are available for selection once more:
”They both did very well,’ he said. ‘They tried to work hard. We know their game and we explained that to players. It was important for them to come in, and this feeling at the moment is something we’re very pleased with.”
“We’ve got decisions to make. But they are nice decisions.”
On the Oldham side of things, former Leeds United favourite John Sheridan believes that his side deserved more than they ended up with, claiming that the stoppage time goal was nothing more than a large ‘kick in the teeth.’
When quizzed by the official Oldham Athletic website, Sheridan said: “That’s a kick in the teeth. We’ve been fortunate to score one or two late goals and it’s great when you do it but not when it happens to you.
“We didn’t deserve to lose; we gave a very good account of ourselves against a team bang in form and I think we were the better side. It’s just a shame we got nothing from the game.”
