Leeds United Statue Defaced

On the night of the 10th anniversary of Billy Bremner’s passing, the statue erected in his honour outside Elland Road was spray painted blue with a tag left hinting that it may have been a Huddersfield hooligan element that carried out the attack.

Staff were on hand to clean up the 9ft high statue ahead of Leeds’ League One fixture against Huddersfield Town, with a number of individual supporters and groups laying tributes at its base.

Despite the mindless idiocy of the few, it was still to be Billy’s day as Leeds went on to thump their Yorkshire rivals 4-0 with goals from Jonathan Douglas, Jermaine Beckford (2) and Tore-Andre Flo.

When asked about the blatant vandalism, Leeds United manager Dennis Wise had a blunt and simple message to the perpetrators:

‘I’d just like to say ‘Up yours. You deserved everything you got today. I’m sure it was some dope who has come along and decided to be funny.

‘We weren’t happy about that and you don’t disrespect a player of that calibre. People like that are just idiots.

‘We don’t need things like that in football and we don’t want things like that in football.’

United captain Jonathan Douglas admitted that the damage done to the Bremner statue added to the determination of the squad to come away with all 3 points: ‘We were told about the statue just before kick-off, and it’s a disgrace.

‘We were already fired up for the game, but that made us even more fired up. You don’t go around doing things like that.’

I would like to add to Wise and Douglas’ opinions with my own. I hope the mindless idiots that defaced a statue that was put up in honour of one of the greatest players this country has ever seen enjoyed their Saturday afternoon. In case you weren’t at the game you may wish to know that the match finished Leeds United 4-0 Huddersfield Town.

I also hope that Huddersfield Town fans now realise that Leeds United, West Yorkshire Police and the Football League were right to restrict the ticketing allocation to just 1,700. Lets face it if we can’t even trust you to behave with that number, why should we have ever given you more?

No matter what those of you involved did, you certainly didn’t ruin Billy’s day.
