Leeds United chief pays classy Norman Hunter tribute

|

Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani has vowed to do all he can to take the club back to the Premier League in honour of Norman Hunter.

The Whites legend, who played over 700 games for the club and won two top division titles, sadly passed away yesterday after contracting coronavirus. And, taking to Twitter, Radrizzani shared an image of a letter from Hunter that revealed ‘it would be a dream’ for him to see the Yorkshire outfit back in the top-flight, with the Italian promising to help make it happen.

Dear Norman, we will make your dream, our dream, come true RIP true gentleman.”

The no-nonsense centre-back was part of the England squad that won the World Cup in 1966 and joined Leeds as a 15-year-old. Hunter’s debut for the club came in 1962 and he would star for the Whites over the next 14 years during what was their most successful era.

During that period, he would lift the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup twice, to go with many domestic honours including the 1972 FA Cup, although they would controversially miss out on the European Cup after losing to Bayern Munich in the final back in 1975.

Hunter visited Elland Road regularly after his career had finished and would surely have been delighted to see that the current crop are within touching distance of the Premier League, as Marcelo Bielsa’s men boast a seven-point lead over third-placed Fulham. So, with just nine games to play they are in a fantastic position and this is sure to give everyone connected with Leeds United even more reason to get over the line when the campaign does eventually resume.
