Leeds left Portman Road with nothing after falling to a cruel deflected winner in the final minute of normal time, having played most of the second half with ten men after the sending off of Aidy White.
Leeds looked well set for all three points after dominating the first half and deservedly going in at the break one up thanks to a Ross McCormack header.
The game changed on its head in the opening minutes of the second half when Aidy White was harshly adjudged to have brought down Ipswich midfielder Jay Emmanuel-Thomas on the edge of the area.
It proved to be the turning point and goals inside the final fifteen minutes from Jason Scotland and Keith Andrews condemned Leeds to defeat.
Leeds boss Simon Grayson reverted to the line up that started last weekends draw at West Ham United with Ramon Nunez returning to the bench.
Ipswich came into the game on the back of a 7-1 drubbing at Peterborough last weekend and Leeds started well against a nervous looking Ipswich.
Ross McCormack had Leeds first chance with David Stockdale denying the inform striker.
Robert Snodgrass, McCormack and Max Gradel had further chances for Leeds but failed to trouble Stockdale.
Stockdale then produced a good save to deny McCormack the opening goal.
Patrick Kisnorbo then saw his header go over the bar following a Leeds corner as Leeds continued to press.
Ipswich had to wait until half way through the half before their first opening when Andy Lonergan saved from Andrews who should have done better.
Emmanuel-Thomas then headed over the bar for the home side as they started to come more into the game.
Leeds finally made the breakthrough just past the half hour when Snodgrass teed up McCormack who buried his header past Stockdale for his fourth goal of the season.
It was no more than Leeds had deserved for dominating the first half and they went in at the break one up.
The big turning point of the game happened early in the second half when a long clearance out of the Ipswich defence found Emmanuel-Thomas up against White.
White was clearly pushed in the back and eventually fell over, getting tangled up with Emmanuel-Thomas.
With White the last man, referee Andy D`Urso produced a red card for White when it should have been a free kick the other way.
The red card forced Grayson into a change with McCormack being sacrificed for Andy O`Brien.
Ipswich quickly responded and Lonergan made a fine save to deny Andrews.
The home side continued to press for an equaliser with the Leeds defence standing firm.
Jason Scotland came on for Ipswich inside the final twenty minutes and he brought the scores level within five minutes of his introduction.
His left foot shot from just outside the area beating Lonergan who would have been disappointed too not make the save.
The goal brought Leeds back to life and Max Gradel had penalty claims waved away by D`Urso.
Leeds hearts were broken inside the final minute when Andrews shot from range took a huge deflection and flew over the head of Lonergan.
Leeds tried to find an equaliser in five minutes of added time but Andrews`s goal had clinched the points for the home side.
An undeserved defeat for Leeds after dominating the first half and the sending off clearly changed the impetus of the game.
Leeds now go into the international break in the bottom five, with just four points from their opening five games.
There are enough signs there to suggest that Leeds will climb the table and they have two home games up next against Crystal Palace and Bristol City when they return to action in September.
