A few weeks back the media rumour mill strongly linked Leeds United with a move for winger Ibai Gomez.

The speculation suggested that we were interested in the player last summer and it was an easy link to make at the time as he’s previously played under manager Marcelo Bielsa. With the January window nearing and Samu Saiz unexpected departing, Gomez as a rumour slightly stepped up a gear with the assumption that it might be an easy deal to secure given he’s out of contract at Alaves come next summer.

Spanish outlet El Gol Digital have now claimed that the player is set for a return to former club Atletico Bilboa and he’s on the verge of completing that deal, leaving us effectively hanging – if we did genuinely have an interest.

A deal in principle has been done at a reported £2.69million.

I’m not convinced we did have a real interest in him as the original reports hung too heavily on Bielsa himself and if he was going to bring in a few of his own old guard, that would’ve been done over the summer to help him influence the dressing room like most managers do. You don’t wait six months and half a season if that’s your intention.
