Leeds potentially offered fresh hope of signing League One ace – report

|

Whilst Leeds United already have a promising strike pairing of Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford, it never hurts to have strength in depth, particularly over such a long season.

So it’s no surprise that Marcelo Bielsa is looking to add to his attacking talent, and could be given a reprieve in one of his rumoured targets. After it was revealed by the South London Press that Millwall are no longer pursuing Portsmouth’s Jamal Lowe, with The Lions instead focusing on a player from the Premier League rather than lower down the football pyramid, Leeds United might now see themselves as the front runners for his signature.

Leeds United have been after the Portsmouth striker for some time according to SkySports, but news has gone quiet on that front in recent weeks. With the news now that Millwall have withdrawn interest in the man who scored 15 league goals for Portsmouth last season, it’s possible that Leeds could revive their interest in bringing the 24-year-old to Elland Road.

It’s easy to see why they would be impressed with him – Jamal Lowe has risen through the ranks of non-league in the since a brief spell in the Football League with Barnet in 2012/13, before signing for Portsmouth, who were then in League Two back in 2016.  He helped guide them to League One in 2017/18 and a playoff spot last season, finishing as their top scorer.

The striker also scored an impressive goal against Sunderland in the final of last season’s Checkatrade Trophy at Wembley as they won the cup on penalties, with Lowe also converting his spot-kick.

While Portsmouth reportedly value Lowe at £3m, it wouldn’t be a huge chunk out of an apparently small budget that Bielsa would work with, and given the upward curve that Lowe is on, it certainly wouldn’t be the worst move Bielsa could make.
