Leeds crashed out of the Carling Cup when they lost to a last minute penalty at Elland Road.

Leeds made four changes from the side that beat Millwall on Saturday. At the back, Shane Higgs replaced Kasper Schmeichel in goal and Alex Bruce replaced Richard Naylor in defence.

Two goal hero from Saturday Davide Somma replaced Sanchez Watt and Max Gradel returned from his four match ban in place of Lloyd Sam.

The first twenty minutes saw both sides trying to get a grip of the game.

The first real effort saw Shane Higgs made a great save to deny Danny N’Guessan as the visitors were beginning to take hold of the game halfway through the half.

Somma had a good chance moments later but scuffed his shot wide.

The game was beginning to liven up, Alex Bruce was next to go close but he headed wide from a corner when he should have done better.

Max Gradel was next to go close, his shot was tipped over by Logan in the Leicester goal.

Leeds eventually took the lead just past the half hour when Gradel`s cross was met by the head of Somma who scored his third goal in less than fourty five minutes action this week.

The goal spurred the home side on and Bradley Johnson saw his shot tipped over the bar close to half time.

Leicester missed a great chance in the final seconds when Steve Howard headed wide from a Bruno Berner cross when he should have at least hit the target.

Leeds went in at half time one goal up thanks to Somma`s headed goal just the half hour.

Leeds should have doubled their lead in the first minute of the second half when Becchio saw his effort cleared off the line by Andy King.

Leicester had a couple of chances, firstly Howard headed wide and then Gallagher saw his long range shot saved by Higgs.

The visitors equalised half way through the half when Steve Howard played the ball into Richie Wellens who made no mistake to beat Shane Higgs.

Leicester were beginning to take control and Shane Higgs had to make a point blank save to keep out Steve Howard.

Simon Grayson decided to make a couple of changes in response, Sanchez Watt and Andy Hughes replacing Luciano Becchio and John Howson.

The visitors were still looking the more likely to score and Higgs again was forced into a save to keep out a Jack Hobbs header.

Leeds had been under pressure for a while, when they finally had a chance, Somma shot over the bar.

Leicester were awarded a penalty with just minutes remaining after a handball by Neil Collins.

Steve Howard made no mistake from the spot, giving Higgs no chance as it was despatch into the bottom corner.

Leeds had no answer to the goal and bowed out of the competition at the second round stage for the first time since 2007.
