With Leeds United falling well short of their own standards in last weekend’s game against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns and travelling back following a 4-1 defeat, Pablo Hernandez stayed philosophical about matters as he spoke to the media following the game.

Quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post following the full-time whistle, the 33-year-old admitted it was a bad day for us and he felt the Baggies had ‘killed’ us on the counter-attack.

“We didn’t have a good day and we lost. But two weeks ago we knew we were not the best team in the world and now we know we are not the worst team. This is football. Sometimes you have good days, sometimes you have bad days and this was a bad day for us. But this loss does not change our mentality. I think this team has always shown a good spirit. Today was maybe the worst game in our season but we need to continue with the same style and with the same mentality.”

Fans will rightly get carried away after such a defeat, although I’ve seen plenty on social media be magnanimous about the loss and accept they were just better on the day, but the players can’t get too high on good days nor too low on bad ones. They will happen, it’s still baby steps under manager Marcelo Bielsa given his time in charge but simply put, we have to be better and that results rubs it in.

He’s also right to talk about no team running away with things this year, it’s incredibly tight at the top and everyone will have additional slip-ups along the way.
