Leeds made to work hard for a point

Leeds United had to settle for a point in a ‘after the lord mayor`s show` performance at Elland Road.

In their first game since the heroics of Old Trafford the side looked like strangers has they struggled to contain a Wycombe side who sat second from bottom of League One before kick off.

Leeds made the perfect start when Jon Howson`s long range shot in the fourth minute bounced over Shearer in the Wycombe goal to give them the lead.

Wycombe came straight back at Leeds at Pittman gave Leeds an early warning when his left foot shot came back off the post with Ankergren stranded.

Jermaine Beckford received a good reception from the fans despite handing in a transfer request, was next to go close but the ball wouldn`t come down for him in front of goal and his shot went over the bar.

The visitors though once again went close to equalising when a corner from Davies went straight across the goal, hit the far post and was cleared off the line.

Wycombe continued to press and Ankergren made a good stop with his feet when Beavon was allowed plenty of space to get his shot away.

Leeds were having to be happy with shots from long range, Snodgrass went closest in the first half when his free kick went just wide.

Leeds best chance of the half to increase their lead was just before half time, Snodgrass looped a free kick in at the far post and Shearer excellently saved Johnson`s powerful header. With the ball still not clear, Woodman got back to clear the ball off the line with Beckford ready to pounce.

The second half started in similar fashion and Beckford tried his look from the edge of the area with an exquisite chip which was caught on the line.

Wycombe were continuing to cause Leeds problems at the back and Ankergren had to be on his toes on more than one occasion.

Kisnorbo almost got the crucial second goal for Leeds but his powerful downward header was cleared off the line.

Wycombe got the equaliser the probably deserved just past the hour, Pittman received the ball wide on the left and with Naylor struggling to get close to him his acute shot across goal gave Ankergren no chance.

The visitors weren`t settling for a point and some scrambled defending by Leeds kept the scores level.

Even the introduction of Max Gradel failed to ignite Leeds as they continued to struggle to get through the Wycombe defence.

Leeds had one final chance in the final minute, Beckford worked himself a bit of room on the right hand side with some fancy footwork but his shot from an acute angle was straight at Shearer.

A frustrating afternoon for Leeds, against another side that raised their performance at Elland Road by 25%.

Some may see it as two points dropped but once again this season Leeds have shown that even when they have an off day they are still very hard to beat and it`s another point nearer promotion.
