Leeds bowed out of the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy on penalties after a thrilling night at Brunton Park.

Leeds started the second leg 2-1 down and looked out of the tie when Adam Clayton gave the home side the lead, and a two goal advantage half way through the first half.

The visitors made the perfect start to the second half when Snodgrass got his head to the ball after a defensive mix up inside the first minute.

Leeds were taking the game to Carlisle and thought they had made the game level on aggregate when Crowe headed in only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.

Within minutes Carlisle had once again got their two goal cushion when a poor clearance by Michalik was pounced on by Kevan Hurst and he gave Ankergren no chance.

Leeds made their final substitution of the night with just over ten minutes remaining when they brought on Mike Grella and they was quickly back in the tie when the ball dropped to Crowe at the far post who rifled into the roof of the net.

The Whites were still needing another goal to make the tie level on aggregate and that came with just over four minutes left when Grella got his head onto a cross from McSheffrey and he gave Collin no chance in the Carlisle goal.

Johnson almost won it for Leeds late on but his effort was scrambled clear by Collin in the Carlisle goal.

The tie finished 4-4 on aggregate with Leeds winning 3-2 on the night and the game was to be settled by a penalty shoot out with no extra time in the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy.

Former Leeds player Ian Harte scored the first penalty for Carlisle and they was quickly to have the advantage as Leeds first spot kick taken by Johnson was saved.

Hurst and Madine scored Carlisle`s next two with Snodgrass and McSheffrey replying for Leeds.

Leeds were handed a life line in the tie when Keogh`s spot kick was ballooned well over the bar.

Mike Grella scored Leeds next penalty and we was back on level terms at 3-3.

With the penalty shoot out effectively at sudden death the pressure was on the players.

Both Adam Clayton for Carlisle and Max Gradel for Leeds scored to make it 4-4.

The next two spot kicks were also dispatched with Horwood scoring for the home side and Kilkenny for Leeds.

Robson put the home side 6-5 ahead, young Lees loan player Shane Lowry saw his spot kick saved by Collin to send Carlisle to Wembley in March and Leeds now left to concentrate on the League.
