Courtesy of Ken Bates` cost cutting exercises, the Leeds United ladies have now practically severed all ties with the men`s team, becoming Leeds Carnegie Ladies FC.
Since Ken Bates cut the funding to the Leeds United Ladies, taking the example of a number of other high-level football clubs (Charlton disbanded their ladies side, only for them to return once more), the Leeds Ladies have done a remarkable job to remain entirely self sufficient, even manging to reach the Women`s FA Cup Final last season.
The Leeds Ladies have been involved with Leeds Metropolitan University over the course of the last year, and closer ties have now seen them align themselves with the Carnegie Faculty of Sport & Education.
Chairperson Melanie Vauvelle-Don explained the partnership on leedsunitedladies.com: “We are delighted to announce the name change from Leeds United Ladies to Leeds Carnegie Ladies FC, which was unanimously voted for at the clubs recent AGM.
We have been a self-supported and funded club for the past three seasons and have done remarkably well with both on and off the field achievements, but now we have come to a point where we need to develop the club even further and after discussions with Leeds Met Carnegie it soon became clear that a proposed enhanced partnership, which included a name change, was the best way forward.
The club will still remain a separate run club as it was before, but now we have the support to take the club to the next level.
