Leeds hierarchy know they can’t repeat the same mistakes

|

As reported by the Yorkshire evening post “Leeds United pursuing deals for two more players as board acknowledge transfer failings”

Leeds Chairman Andrea Radrizzani knows his board simply can not repeat the same mistakes as last season if they want to avoid a relegation battle again this term.  The whites flirted with the bottom three all season, and actually never rose higher than 15th in a campaign that went down to the wire.  Leeds ultimately staying up after winning away at Brentford and Burnley losing to Newcastle on the final day.

It was obvious to see that the squad needed additions, even if only to improve a youthful looking substitutes bench.  The days in January ticked by, fans hoping they would see some fresh legs added to a worn out, dejected looking team.  The deadline came and went, no new faces.  Fans hoping this wouldn’t come back to haunt them, and eventually surviving by the skin of their teeth.

The Italian has since admitted that they got it wrong and has been making all the right noises to ensure it would not be repeated in the 2022/23 season.

The board have showed they are backing Jesse Marsch by starting early in the transfer window, securing two players, with a third rumoured to be signing by the end of next week.  The whites need to improve in some key areas, most noticeably a leaky defence and some extra attacking options.

Nobody on the outside knows exactly what happened, or who was to blame for last season. The two opposing arguments are that the board wouldn’t back Marcelo Bielsa, and that the Argentinian didn’t actually want any more players brought in.  It was well documented that Bielsa liked to operate with a small squad, but with injuries decimating the team and Leeds being on the end of some horrible results, it finished sour for the man who had ended Leeds exile from the Premier League.

The club are trying to make sure they are not in that position again, seeking to secure their top targets as quickly as possible to give Marsch the best chance possible of improving on last seasons league position.  The importance of remaining in the top flight is massive, not only in the finances, but also in keeping hold of key players.  So let’s hope the board really have learnt from their mistakes this time.
