Leeds United continued life under manager Marcelo Bielsa this evening as we faced Preston North End in the EFL Cup second round.

Hosting the side at Elland Road for the tie, with a strong start to life in the 2018/19 Championship campaign booking our place in the third round of the domestic Cup to enjoy a run on that front would be the cherry on top.

Making a number of changes to freshen things up was expected, but for anyone thinking Bielsa wasn’t taking the game seriously, you only had to glance at the bench for in-form players to bring on if the match didn’t go our way.

Unfortunately, it didn’t go our way and a second-minute penalty for them gave the hosts an advantage and they’d doubled that to 2-0 by the halftime break. Bielsa responded by bringing Samu Saiz and Mats Klich on, and Ezgjan Alioski joined on the hour mark, but despite 22 chances overall we just couldn’t make the breakthrough, even though they went down to ten men after 30 minutes.

A disappointing end to Bielsa’s opening EFL Cup campaign but with so many changes, fans will have to brush this one off and ensure it doesn’t transmit to our league campaign.
