Leeds expected to make move for 5 ft 5 Bielsa target but face stiff competition – report

|

We may have failed to land Daniel James in January, but our interest in Swansea’s winger has not gone away, according to The Sun.

The newspaper are reporting that they expect the Whites to launch a fresh raid on the cash-strapped Championship outfit come the summer, and look to finally sign Marcelo Bielsa’s number one winter target.

It is claimed, however, that we will face stiff competition for the Welshman’s signature, especially if we fail to secure promotion to the Premier League, with top-flight title-chasing Manchester City now hot on James’ case.

Pep Guardiola’s side are said to be interested in striking a deal with the Liberty Stadium outfit in the region of £7million – a combined £1.5m less than we had agreed to pay in January – as they consider the 5 ft 5 winger a great homegrown project.

The Etihad Stadium outfit are not the only Premier League club understood to be interested, either, but the Citizens are the only side mentioned in the report.

News of their interest comes just days after James opened his international account in his first competitive outing under Ryan Giggs, scoring in Wales’ one-nil Euro 2020 qualifying win over Slovakia.

The Sun also acknowledges that James will not enter contract talks with Swansea until the summer while the South Wales outfit waits on the arrival of new Chairman Trevor Birch.

James’ debut Wales goal brought his overall tally for the season to four and four assists, adding to his trio of strikes for the Jacks in all competitions.
