Leeds booked a clash at there old rivals Manchester United in the third round after finally overcoming a dogged Kettering Town in extra time.

Leeds welcomed back Andy Hughes after injury, whilst Aidan White and Luciano Becchio also started.

Leeds started on the front foot and Beckford had the sides first effort on goal but shot over.

Mike Doyle was next to get a chance but his shot was blocked and put out for a corner.

Kilkenny was the next to have a chance but he shot just wide after excellent football from Leeds.

The Whites were totally dominating the game, it was inevitable that a goal would come and Luciano Becchio`s glancing header from a Snodgrass cross broke the deadlock on twenty minutes.

Beckford almost doubled the lead soon after but his shot was well saved by Harper.

Snodgrass blazed wide when in front of goal and should have done better.

Kettering`s only chance of the half fell to Leeds old boy Anthony Elding but he shot wide when through on goal, Leigh Bromby just doing enough to put him off.

Robert Snodgrass was enjoying a free role on the pitch and he put in another excellent cross that Beckford headed wide when he should have done better.

Kilkenny almost doubled the lead but his left shoot shot hit the post and went to safety.

He tried his luck again within a minute but this time his long range right foot shot took a deflection and went out for a corner.

Harper once again thwarted Beckford as Leeds continued to look for the second goal.

Howson was next to test the keeper when the Kettering stopper saved his fierce shot.

Leeds went in at half time just one up and would have been disappointed to have not sewn the game up by now.

The second half continued much the same with Doyle having Leeds first chance of the half.

Becchio then hit a post after some excellent build up work from the Leeds side.

Beckford then had two glorious chances in quick succession but couldn`t beat Harper once again.

The game changed on 55 minutes when firstly Aidan White was replaced with a calf injury by Tony Capaldi.

Soon afterwards Robert Snodgrass was cautioned or a poor challenge, his fifth of the season meaning he will miss Saturday`s trip to Brentford.

Kettering who had steadily been getting back into the game equalised when Partridge`s pin point cross found Elding in space whose point blank header gave Ankergren no chance.

This spurred Kettering on and they was now enjoying much more possession and the domination of the first hour by Leeds was a thing of the past.

Leeds did however start to take control again inside the final fifteen minutes and Beckford, Howson and Kilkenny all had chances.

Beckford had another shot saved as his frustrating evening in front of goal continued.

Tresor Kandol came on in place of Luciano Becchio and his height and strength was quickly shown.

After a string of corners, Kandol had the best chance but he headed wide when in a good position.

Deep into added time Kandol had an almost identical chance, this time his shot was on target and cleared off the line by the Kettering defence.

That was the final chance in normal time and extra time was required.

Robert Snodgrass had the best chance to put Leeds back in front in the first half of extra time but his chipped shot came back off the bar, the third time that they had hit the woodwork in the game.

Snodgrass had another good chance for Leeds in the first minute of the second half but lifted his shot over the bar.

Mike Grella did finally put Leeds back in front after dogged work down the right by Bromby.

Leeds scored again within a minute when Snodgrass`s cross was met at the far stick by Kandol.

Mike Grella added a fourth with some good footwork and excellent curling shot into the top corner.

Jermaine Beckford added a fifth in the final stages when he poked in from close range.

To be honest the score line probably reflects Leeds dominance over the night although they were made to work very hard by a hard working Kettering Town side.
