When it came to replacing the outgoing Dennis Wise, it appears that there was only one man for the job in the eyes of the upper echelons of the Leeds United management.
The answer to their collective prayer? A man who has played over 300 games of professional football in a Leeds United shirt with little to do but for the odd round of golf. It now appears that our man in Monaco was working on a replacement from the minute the club fielded a call from the North-East regarding former boss Dennis Wise, and moved quickly to install him as boss once the former Chelsea players move to become King Kev’s half-supervisor was confirmed.
Speaking to the official website, leedsunited.com our chairman was, as ever, bullish over the results of his days work:
‘We decided to move quickly and Gary was always in our minds,’ said Mr Bates.
‘I’m delighted we were able to do a deal in such a short space of time. We don’t like to do business in the newspapers and the media and have long drawn out discussions.
‘On Friday when we heard Newcastle were interested in Dennis Wise we immediately started our contingency plans and we identified Gary.
‘He is here until the end of June in the first place and his mission is to complete the good work and get us back to the Championship.’
In what appears to be an insight for the future under Gary, Bates went on to explain in a worryingly similar way to that of Kevin Keegan, that he wants his team to play football, and unlike the Magpies, probably wants them to win whilst they are at it:
On McAllister’s tactics as he takes the reigns the chairman said:
‘He has a philosophy about how Leeds should go forward,’ said the chairman.
‘He wants to play football and he wants his team to play football, but he also knows that’s not always easy in League One.
‘I said 20 years ago I wanted my team to be cheered off for entertainment and I want that to happen here. I think Gary will give us that.’
Time will tell Uncle Ken as to whether you’ve pulled off a blinder of a move, or if you’re attempt to appease the uneasy leaves the club floundering in League One for an extra season.
