Leeds United product Tom Pearce is to undergo a Deadline Day medical with Wigan Athletic after the Greater Manchester side launched a cut-price approach, according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

The Latics were late to register their interest, with Barnsley, Portsmouth and Sunderland all emerging as potential suitors before the DW Stadium natives lodged their formal approach.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Paul Cook’s side have offered a figure in the region of £250,000 for Pearce, and appear to be in a strong position to secure his services despite reports suggesting Barnsley had agreed to pay £275,000 for the 21-year-old on Wednesday, August 7.

The Tykes had also allegedly offered Pearce a contract on similar terms to the improved contract he penned at Elland Road just over a year ago, but his move to Oakwell would have been to serve as cover for Daniel Pinillos.

But a move to Wigan could present the Ormskirk-born defender with a greater role this season, as Football Insider note that Latics head coach Cook is an admirer of the rarely-seen man, and feels he could prove to be a valuable asset despite his limited game time under Marcelo Bielsa.

Our Argentine manager called on Pearce just twice from the bench in the Championship before offloading the left-back to Scunthorpe on loan, with his last outing for the Whites now looking set to be his 40-minute cameo against Nottingham Forest last October.
