Aapo Halme only joined Leeds in January 2018, but the towering defender’s time at Elland Road is over after the club announced that the former HJK Helsinki centre-back has joined fellow Championship side Barnsley for an undisclosed fee.
Halme is said to have undergone his medical with the Oakwell natives on Tuesday, according to Football Insider, after talks between United and Barnsley chiefs ramped up over the past week, with Daniel Stendel looking to add the 6 ft 4 centre-back and Mallik Wilks to his recently-promoted Championship outfit, following the Tykes’ second-place finish in the 2018/19 League One season.
At the time, the discussions were believed to have been regarding potential loan moves for the Whites pair, as Marcelo Bielsa is unconvinced either are ready to challenge for first-team duties next term, with Jack Harrison and Ben White’s arrivals further restricting the likelihood of greater minutes at Elland Road.
Negotiations regarding Halme’s future, however, took a twist and Whites chiefs soon gave the 21-year-old permission to secure a permanent move to our Yorkshire rivals.
Barnsley have now agreed to a three-year contract with the Finland U21 international, with an option for a fourth in favour of the club.
Stendel was in the market for new centre-backs this summer after the Tykes sold Ethan Pinnock to Brentford for £3million, and have used the funds to land our £500,000 2018 arrival and AFC Wimbledon’s Toby Sibbick for an undisclosed six-figure fee.
When word reached Reddit that Halme looked set to join Barnsley on a permanent transfer, this is how these Whites fans reacted…
