“Learning off Ben White” – So many Leeds fans left in awe of wonderkid capable of “pure class”

|

So many Leeds United fans were left in awe of Alfie McCalmont for his pass leading to Jordan Stevens’ goal against Wigan Athletic’s Under 23s on Monday.

Stevens doubled the Whites lead 20 minutes into the second-half when he connected with McCalmont’s perfectly weighted through ball, delivered on the reverse between the hosts’ left and centre-back to leave his teammate with the simple task of rolling the ball under Daniel Gyollai.

Ryan Edmondson had opened the scoring six minutes earlier with McCalmont again involved in the action, as he stole possession deep in the Wigan half to leave our youth striker bearing down on goal.

McCalmont could have seen his efforts lead to a third strike moments later, as well, as the 5-cap Northern Ireland U21 international played another perfect pass to Edmondson who teed up Liam McCarron, but the winger could not beat Gyollai.

McCalmont made his senior Leeds debut in the Carabao Cup against Salford City in August and featured against Stoke City in the Second Round, but is yet to play in the Championship after being an unused substitute on three occasions.

Should Bielsa include McCalmont in his squad more often?

Yes, absolutely

Only on the bench

No, he isn't ready yet

Our emerging wonderkid may not have to wait much longer for more first-team minutes with play like his against Wigan’s U23s, which supporters have suggested carried echoes of Pablo Hernandez.

One fan even claimed he is learning from Brighton loanee Ben White, who played a delightful pass to Patrick Bamford at the weekend as we beat Luton Town.
