Lots of Leeds United fans have been reacting on social media, after Leeds Live’s Beren Cross highlighted how the Rugby Football Union have set an example for how football can deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
The RFU announced on Thursday that the 2019/20 rugby union season for all leagues in its pyramid below the top-flight would be cancelled, and that promotions and relegations will still take place through a “best playing record formula”.
Reports by The Independent have suggested the formula will take into account each side’s average points from all home and away fixtures played thus far, and apply that for the remaining games of the now-axed schedule.
This method has already led to the Newcastle Falcons having their promotion from the second-tier confirmed, while the same ruling for the Championship would see Leeds and West Bromwich Albion land a Premier League berth.
The EFL and other football authorities in England are still insistent on resuming the season once it is safe to do so, with nine games remaining of the Championship campaign.
Here are some of the messages shared as fans reacted to Cross’ update…

But as it says in the piece, intention is still to finish it. No rush. June internationals cancelled. No need to even consider deciding anything for weeks yet. If EFL have any sense (there has been signs of intelligent life of late, green shoots) they’ll just sit tight for a while

Imagine waiting 17 long years for promotion then having it confirmed via an EFL statement https://t.co/8e8GSUWVvi

Not ideal but at this stage I’ll take anything tht doesnt involve voiding the whole thing MOT

It’s certainly a great precedent. Worth noting that they were 15 points in front with 1 game left to play, and that they haven’t yet decided what to do about promotion and relegation, so could be good to see that part before the precedent becomes too close to our hearts.
