“It is a shame”: Former player expects 30-y/o to secure Leeds United exit in next window

|

Noel Whelan feels that Barry Douglas will leave Leeds United in the next window after a frustrating time in Yorkshire.

The Scotland left-back joined the Whites ahead of the previous campaign and he was considered a major coup at the time, having just starred as a wing-back in Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves side that won the Championship title in 2018.

Yet, a combination of injuries and the form of others means that Douglas has rarely managed to hit the same heights in a white shirt. So much so, he has been on the periphery this season, making just 11 appearances in Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Therefore, Whelan told Football Insider that he thinks a move away could suit all parties in the next window, as the 30-year-old will seek a first-team spot at another club.

The performances we expected from him, the likes that he gave at Wolves have not been seen. He is a good player, there is no doubt about that but it has been a very stop-start time at Leeds. We have failed to see the best of him. It is a shame.

I would say Douglas is third-choice. He generated a lot of excitement but we have barely seen anything. If he is going to be third choice a move to Rangers would be good. Leeds get some money and allow Douglas to go play football somewhere else.

Will Leeds United be playing in the Premier League next season?

Yes

No

The former Konyaspor man has been in and out of the matchday squad this season, with Bielsa generally going with Stuart Dallas at left-back, whilst Ezgjan Alioski has been another option for the Argentinian. And, it’s a decision that has paid off, with Leeds top of the Championship and they are on course to win promotion back to the Premier League – ending a 16-year stay away from the top level.

Due to the current uncertainty, it has been suggested that the club could win promotion without having to kick another ball, as they would go up on the points per game methods that may be used by the authorities to decide the league.
