Leeds United are in the process of assembling a squad that can challenge for promotion to the Premier League, and one area that requires considerable attention is their defence. The Whites had an appalling defensive record last season, and they’re expected to augment their defensive unit. Leeds have been linked with a move for Jon Aurtenetxe, who Bielsa managed at Athletic Bilbao.

According to Spanish publication, Mundo Deportivo, Leeds United are interested in signing Aurtenetxe who is available on a free transfer. The Spanish defender was a favourite for Bielsa during his time as the Bilbao manager, yet he’s failed to progress since leaving the La Liga outfit.

The 26-year-old has had a series of unsuccessful spells with Spanish clubs, and he joined Dundee in the Scottish Premiership last season, where he registered 16 appearances. Truthfully, this does seem to be a comparatively obscure and risky move from Leeds’ perspective, but Biesla could be confident of resurrecting the defender’s best form.

One of the defender’s most prominent features is his versatility; he can operate at the heart of the defence, or as a left-back. Moreover, he is highly appreciated for his superb blocking ability.

That said, there are multiple aspects of his game that require improvements such as his discipline and concentration. Additionally, he needs to work upon his ability to retain possession of the ball.

As previously mentioned, this transfer does seem strange on paper, but the presence of a familiar face could be of great benefit to Bielsa. If the Argentine able can revive the Spanish defender’s confidence and retrieve his best form, then it could prove to be an excellent piece of business for Leeds.
