Last season saw an amazing 23% drop in attendances at Elland Road after chairman Ken Bates introduced a major price hike. Is he tearing the heart out of the club?

Following United’s defeat in the Championship play-off final to Watford, Bates called on the fans to buy season tickets to boost the club’s quest for a return to the Premiership.

Bates: ‘The question now is whether or not people in this city want a Premiership football club.

‘If they do then they need to come out and support us. The real test of how much people want that to happen will be how well they support us next season.’

However … Elland Road will be the most expensive stadium to watch Championship football in next season according to the latest figures.

United’s most expensive season ticket next season will be £726 – over £200 more than the average in the division and £69 more than second-placed Norwich.

Tickets at Stoke will cost just £399 for the coming campaign.
