Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills believes that his old team are “in the box seat” to secure the services of defender Ben White permanently.

The 22-year-old, who is on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, is having a wonderful season at Elland Road and has played a crucial part in the Whites’ success on the pitch during the current campaign.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are at the summit of the Championship and could be promoted to the top-flight for the first time since 2004.

White’s name has been compared to some of the best defensive names in the Premier League. Former top-flight striker Noel Whelan described him as the “new Harry Maguire” as he continues his development in the Championship

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills was asked whether Leeds will retain the services of White or if he will return to Brighton.

Will Leeds retain the services of Ben White?

Yes

No

No

“Will Brighton be in the Championship? There is a possible scenario where Leeds come up and Brighton go down but if Brighton stay up they might want him to play for them”, he said.

“But it would not surprise me if a big club comes in for him, top-four, top six. I am not sure if he is that good but he could be that good.

“He has been exceptional. He is a good defender and good on the ball so there it would not be a big risk for top clubs.

“Leeds may be in the box seat because the player likes the club but the biggest concern will be about a big, big club coming in for him this summer.”

It is difficult to disagree with what Mills said. He’s spot on. Where the two teams stand at the end of the season will be significant in White’s next move in his career.

The Elland Road faithful will be keen to retain his services after he has started 37 games this season, providing two assists, and averaging 2.8 aerial duels won, 1.7 tackles and three clearances per game, via Whoscored.

There has never been a better opportunity for Leeds to reach the promised land. Not only will they be rewarded top-flight football, but also the chance to retain key players, as well as bring in Premier League-established ones too.
