“I do not expect him to go down that route”: Pundit cools idea of Leeds United moving for 33-y/o

Kevin Phillips does not believe that Marcelo Bielsa will sign Joe Hart for Leeds United due to concerns about his distribution.

The former England stopper is entering the final month of his contract with Burnley right now and he seems set to leave in the summer, with Hart recently admitting that he may have to look abroad for his next club. However, Leeds had been mooted as a potential destination for the keeper and it was claimed that the player would be willing to take a wage cut in order to secure a move to Elland Road.

Yet, speaking to Football Insider, Phillips explained why Bielsa’s demands on a keeper, similar to those by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola who froze Hart out, means that this is unlikely to happen.

Would you sign Joe Hart if we are promoted?

Yes

No

I do not think Bielsa would go for Joe Hart. I think he will take a similar stance to Pep Guardiola. Joe has been a wonderful goalkeeper but Bielsa is looking for someone who has a left foot, right foot and can drill it to the full-backs and the wingers. So I do not expect him to go down that route.”

Despite that, bringing in a new number one may be a priority in the summer as there are doubts surrounding Kiko Casilla’s long-term future. The Spaniard is currently serving an eight-game suspension after he was found guilty of using racist language towards Charlton’s Jonathan Leko and it has been suggested that he could seek a return to his home country in the next transfer window. Whilst Illan Meslier is expected to sign from Lorient in a £5m deal, it would leave Leeds short in terms of experience and depth should Casilla go.
