‘How convenient’, ‘Embarrassing’ – These Leeds United fans are not happy at comments from key Championship figure

Luton Town’s chief executive Gary Sweet has suggested that the Championship season should be cancelled and revealed the club don’t want to play games if they are preventing NHS staff from accessing tests.

As we know, the current crisis has seriously impacted the game, with the last round of fixtures played back on the weekend of March 7. Whilst no new date has been decided for a restart, the EFL made it clear that they intend to finish the campaign and outlined the importance of getting tests sorted for all those involved.

However, Sweet, speaking to The Price of Football podcast as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, confirmed that the Hatters have reservations about returning.

From a moral, ethical point of view it’s right to cancel the season, probably. I have written to the Football League to make my point on that, actually as a club we really do not want to play games, we don’t want to take part in the remainder of the season unless we’ve got some form of comfort that we’re not taking testing kits away from the NHS.”

If that did happen, it would have serious ramifications for Leeds, who currently lead the way in the Championship and would get the glory and financial benefits that promotion brings. Therefore, they were quick to dismiss Sweet’s claim and were convinced he was acting in self-interest as Luton are in the bottom three.

Here we look at some of the reaction…
