It was being reported earlier today that Leeds United were one of the clubs who had joined the hunt for Everton defender Matthew Pennington.

The 23-year-old centre-back has been reportedly told by Everton that he’s free to secure a loan move away from the club again this season and Leeds Live have suggested that he has the pick of three clubs – Leeds, Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic.

In a year-long loan deal at Elland Road in 2017/18 the player made 24 appearances for us but his individual showings left plenty in the fanbase mixed when it came to their reactions to his quality.

With our only natural centre-backs being Pontus Jansson, Liam Cooper and Conor Shaughnessy – Gaetano Berardi and Kalvin Phillips have filled in during pre-season – the sense in bringing in more natural cover isn’t wrong.

However, at least for these Leeds fans, Pennington shouldn’t be on our target list if we want to do that based purely on what they’ve seen previously from him.
