Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips believes that Leeds United youngster Ryan Edmondson deserves an opportunity in the first team.
The Whites are short in terms of strength in depth in the attacking department, with Marcelo Bielsa’s first-choice striker Patrick Bamford struggling and badly out of form.
The 26-year-old has only scored once in his last nine appearances for Leeds as they continue to struggle with injuries, as new signing Jean-Kevin Augustin looks set to be absent for a significant chunk of the season.
Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips feels that the 19-year-old U23s striker can put some pressure on the underperforming Bamford.
Should Edmondson get a chance for the first team?
“They should have Edmondson on the bench,” he said.
“It puts pressure on Bamford. When you know you have not got anybody on the bench that can come on and replace you, you can almost slip into that comfort zone knowing that even if you play at 75% you are not getting brought off.
“It is a concern for me and I think you should put the young kid on the bench. He might do something that changes a game.
“His enthusiasm will be there and his desire because he will want to impress.”
So yes, Edmondson could be the answer. Former Whites’ boss Paul Heckingbottom was thoroughly impressed with the 19-year-old and joked that he “looks 36”.
Although there is huge pressure on the first-team to achieve promotion to the Premier League for the first time since 2004, there is no reason why he can’t be part of that.
