Former Leeds United striker and now BBC pundit, Noel Whelan, has again turned his sights towards former Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Helder Costa, and he’s sticking to the line that the 26-year-old has simply not done enough in a Leeds shirt to warrant the reported £15million price tag that we are obligated to pay for him whenever the current 2019/20 campaign comes to an end.

Over the summer we brought the Portuguese talent in on a season long loan, where it was believed his deal would become permanent at the end of the year, but with the current campaign paused owing to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, the versatile midfielder has only made 29 starts (eleven substitute showings) and only chipped in with four goals and two assists.

Has Costa Impressed You Yet?

Jury Is Still Out, Has To Improve

Manager Marcelo Bielsa has previously defended the players attacking contribution, but explaining that he’s asked him to play more of a team role and take on advanced defensive duties, but even then, it’s still a poor return given what we know he can do in the second tier.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan remained less than impressed.

“He has not done enough. I have seen glimpses of what he could be but £15million is too much for him right now. It is up to him if he is a £15million player in the future. He needs consistency in his performances. This is exactly what happened with Jack Harrison last year. We signed him on a loan deal with a view to a permanent when Wolves were in the Premier League. What does that say? You do not let a good player go when you are in the Premier League. They were willing to let him go when they go gained promotion and it tells a story. We need consistency from him.”

Whelan has a fair point about settling in and understanding what Bielsa wants from him when he references the improvement we’ve seen in Harrison compared to last year, so by no means should Costa be written off – but we should definitely be asking for more from him.
