“Had Chances But Did Not Score” – Leeds’ Achilles Heel Comes To The Fore Again For Bielsa

|

With the summer transfer window slamming shut on Thursday, Leeds United did manage to capture the services of Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, but unsurprisingly he didn’t feature in the matchday squad selection by manager Marcelo Bielsa who led with an unchanged side following our opening day win against Bristol City.

Leeds dominated the tie as is now usual for us under the Argentine and Pablo Hernandez gave us the advantage with just over 30 minutes remaining in the game. Some poor defending from a corner saw the visitors to Elland Road draw level, and ultimately with the game finishing at 1-1, we were again left to rue our greater chances on the day and the failure to put them in the back of the net.

Still, it’s early days and four from six from the first two fixtures shouldn’t really be reason for complaint but having hit the bar, no doubt in some quarters Patrick Bamford will again be getting some stick, but it could’ve been very different, especially had the penalty shout been given.

With our newbies still to settle in, there should still be plenty of optimism.

Speaking to the Leeds Live following the full time whistle, Bielsa told the press of the game.

“In the previous game we did the same chances as the opponent. We scored goals, they didn’t score. Then it allowed us to have clear winning. To score the chances that one team create, you cannot say this can be a different target because it’s part of the game. Of course, our possibilities to win if we are more able to increase the goals we score.”

Adding.

“Improve the finishing of each action is something that we can only link with aspects that you are watching incorrectly. This modelling with the type of game, with the advantage that the opponent gives to us with the clarity of the players to have the chance to finish this action, we can say to you, the players assembled today had chances but did not score. It’s not because of the training where this situation repeats again and again. In the first half we had a lot of possibilities to put the ball on the side, largely from the full-backs but we didn’t have a clear connection with the player crossing and the player who needs to finish. At the same time we had four players in the box. It might be something that you can improve. We created 10 chances, enough to win the game. In the previous pass we fought to finish, we are training from 15 months ago, but you don’t have a clear realisation between training and on the pitch. Because after the game you have a lot of things you can’t control.”

With Eddie Nketiah to come in, and with us already knowing that Helder Costa carries a decent goal threat, as long as we keep creating chances, the goals should follow as confidence rises further.
